The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs competed at the Mid-American Conference Championships today, Oct. 28, at Bowling Green State University's Mel Brodt Cross Country Course. The women's team placed second with 76 points while the men's team notched a fifth-place finish scoring 139 points.

Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) earned All-MAC First Team designation for the men while Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) and Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) earned First Team accolades for the women. Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague) also captured Second Team recognition.

"Marcus ran a great race to get First-Team All MAC and lead the team, we didn't accomplish all of our goals collectively, but with the youngest team in the MAC we are looking forward to the future," said Head Men's Cross Country Coach Mark Rinker.

Kemp was the first Eagle to cross the finish line in the men's 8k, completing the course in 24:29.9 and placing seventh individually, earning All-MAC First Team distinction. Freshman Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School), slotted second for EMU, traversing the 8k in 25:01.91 for a 24th place finish.

A pair of Eagles placed in the number 34 and 35 spots, as Linus Vennemann (Osnabruck, Germany/Gymnasium 'In der Wuste') and Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill./Barrington), finished in 25:20.31, and 25:23.13, respectively. Furlong's 25:23.13 goes down as a career-best for the sophomore as he bested his previous best (25:32.8) by 9.67 seconds.

Freshman Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County) placed 39th for Eastern in 25:26.16, followed by Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) (42nd – 25:30.60), Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) (46th – 25:35.86), and Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) (52nd – 25:45.93).

Freshman Carson Vanderschaaf (Marquette, Mich./Marquette Senior) was the final finisher for the EMU men as he placed 66th in 26:31.77.

"We weren't able to put together the kind of team performance that we were hoping for.  Our top three runners were spectacular but we faltered after that.  But I'm proud of the girls for fighting until the end.  We're disappointed but it was a good step forward for us to be back challenging for the title.  I'm excited to get back to work to prepare for regionals in two weeks,"
Said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Sue Parks.

Battling throughout the entirety of the 6k course with the women's leader, Davies finished second for the Eagles in 20:31.52 marking another top-five finish for the senior. On the heels of Davies came Marchant, who impressively finished the race in 20:46.28 for a fifth-place finish.

Moreno was the third Eagle harrier to cross the finish line for the Eastern women, placing ninth in 20:59.50. An All-MAC Second Team selection one season ago, Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya/Middle Tennessee State) placed 27th in 21:39.11, followed by Mackenzie Morgan (Wellington, New Zealand/Whanganui Collegiate) 10 spots later, placing 33rd in 21:47.09.

Next for EMU came Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) (43rd – 22:16.62) and Tabatha Walford (Northamptonshire, England/Bishop Stopford/Nevada), followed by Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac) (67th – 22:44.32).
