The women placed sixth as a team, its best finish since the 2018 season while the men finished 19th

MADISON, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country teams competed today, Nov. 10, at the 2023 NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course hosted by the University of Wisconsin where the women finished in sixth place out of 32 teams competing in the 6k while the men placed 19th out of 30 teams in the 10k.

"I'm very proud of our women. This was our best regional finish since 2018. It was exciting to see us put together our best race of the season today. All of the credit goes to the team for coming back so strong after finishing a close second at the MAC [meet]. Esme Davies ran another great race to earn all-region honors and Paige Marchant just missed by one spot as a freshman. All seven women who competed today ran well. I'm excited to see what this group will do in the future," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Sue Parks.

The Eastern women put together their best race of the season as they were once again led by Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), who finished the 6k course in 20:53.6 for an 18th place finish, marking the highest individual finish for a member of the women's team since Natalie Cizmas finished 10th  in the 2019 rendition of the race. Also, Davies is the first EMU woman to earn all-region honors since Cizmas did so in 2019.

Immediately followed by Davies was freshman stand-out Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central), who notched a 26th-place finish in 21:04.8, missing all-region honors by one spot. Furthermore, Marchant was one of just four freshmen to finish inside the top 26.

Finishing in the 40s came Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya/Middle Tennessee State), who placed 41st in 21:21.5, and Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague), who finished 46th in 21:25.9.

Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romanina/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) was next for the Eagles, slotting 77th in 21:53.9. Tabatha Walford (Northhamptonshire, England/Bishop Stopford/Nevada) and Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac) rounded out the race for the EMU women as the two finished in 111th and 112th, respectively. Musta had a career-outing as she traversed the course in 22:28.2.

Altogether, the Eastern women pieced together their best finish at the regional meet since the 2018 squad also placed sixth, posting 231 points, led by former harriers Sydney Meyers and Cizmas.

"I was happy with the way the guys competed. We brought a very young team into the year and they have grown up fast. The future is going to be bright," said Head Men's Cross Country Coach Mark Rinker.

Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) kicked-off the men's 10k for the Eagles on a high note as he finished 58th individually in a personal-best 31:05. Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) continued the PRs for Eastern as he too clocked the best 10k of his career in 31:46.5 for 104th place finish.

Up next for the Eagles was yet another career-best performance, this time coming from Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix), who ran the course in 31:52, finishing 110th. In his first collegiate 10k, Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County) placed 122nd in 32:01.6.

Senior Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Germany/Gymnasium "In der Wüste") placed 128th in 32:06.2, tailed by Joey Furlong (Deer Park, Ill./Barrington), who secured a 161st place finish in 32:49.1, a career-best for the sophomore.

Overall, six of the seven EMU men competing ran the best 10k of their respective collegiate careers.
