YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to the undefeated Broncos of Western Michigan University today, Oct. 20, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Ava Siefke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Eagles attack. Defensively, EMU saw three players reach double figures in digs, including Hannah Howard's (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) 19, 14 from Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss./Brandon/Mississippi State), and 11 more from Siefke. From the front row, Angel Baylark (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington-UT Martin) contributed eight blocks.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles dropped a back-and-forth first set, losing 26-24 in a stanza that featured eight lead changes and was tied 16 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the match.
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan then lost set two 25-9 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. The Eagles dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.
SET 3 | EMU couldn't prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Eagles fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-18.

» In the first set, Eastern Michigan took the Broncos to extra points but ultimately lost by a score of 26-24. It is the ninth time this season that a set Eastern Michigan has participated in went to extra points.
» Seven Eagles contributed a kill in the match. In the 2023 season, the Eagles have had seven or more players record a single kill in all but three matches (19). Last season, EMU had seven or more Eagles contribute a single kill in just 16 matches.

» Olivia Szylar (Itasca, Ill./ Lake Park) led the Eagles in assists with 15. It is only the third time this season in which the senior has recorded at least 15 assists in a match, and it is also the third consecutive match in which the setter has tallied 15 or more.
» Hannah Rae Kivett (Chandler, Ind./Castle/Florida Gulf Coast) also contributed for the Eagles, recording eight assists and seven digs. It is the second such match this season in which she had eight assists and seven digs in the same contest. Kivett also recorded the feat against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Aug. 25.
» As a team, Eastern Michigan recorded 11.5 total blocks in the loss to the Broncos. It is the fourth time this season in which the Eagles have tallied at least 11 total blocks this season. The total is the third highest total blocks the Green and White have accrued this season, behind only 14 against IUPUI, Aug. 25 and 13 against Western Illinois, Sept. 2.
