Cross Country Completes Two Meets in One Day

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan men's and women's cross country programs competed in two meets today, Oct. 13. The EMU women took home ninth place at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, while the men finished 21st. The remaining Eastern women competed at the falcon Invitational finishing in ninth place just behind Cleveland State University.
"It was a good day for us. Esme Davies had another impressive performance and Faith Rono had her best race of the season. We're excited about where we are at this point in the season and we're looking forward to putting it all together in the post season," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Sue Parks.
Out of the gate in Texas, senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) led the EMU women in the 6K with a 6:33.8 2k split, finishing the race ninth overall individually in 19:54.3, marking the fourth straight race tabbing a personal-best time for the miler. Freshman Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) continued what has been an impressive start to her career as she slotted in 29th individually in 20:19.7 in her first collegiate 6k.
Familiar faces such as Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague) and Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya/Middle Tennessee State) kept close throughout the contest with Moreno completing the course in 20:43, shattering her previous personal-best (21:29.9). Rono would end the race in 71st in 20:55.
Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) began the wave of EMU newcomers as she was next for the Eagles, finishing 93rd overall with a career-fastest time, 21:05.5. Behind Zaro followed Mackenzie Morgan (Wellington, New Zealand/Whanganui Collegiate), also with a personal-best day, clocking in at 21:42.8. Freshman Laisette Rachal thoroughly beat her previous career-best time (24:03.6), as she finished the 6k in 22:52.7.
Kayla Muir (Ida, Mich./Ida/Stautzenburg College) ended the Eagles' day on a high note as she too would record a career-fastest 6k in 23:40.8.
Finishing with five harriers in the top-100, the women secured a ninth place finish out of 42 teams competing at the Arturo Barrios.
"It was exciting to see the guys compete and take a big step forward individually and as a team. We know we have a young team but they took a big step forward today. Marcus ran a strong race up front. We are excited to start preparing for the post season," said men's Head Coach Mark Rinker.
Senior Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's Kitchener) paced the Eagles' men yet again as he finished the 8K course in 24:01.2, starting EMU's day with a personal-best time. Although Kemp finished first for the Green and White, freshman Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) was hot out of the gate, clocking his 2k split in 5:46.4 and his 4.2k in 12:26.2. Cornelius concluded his day finishing in 104th in 24:42.1, a career-outing for the second straight meet.
Kian Wiles (Hull, England/) strolled in third for Eastern and 137-of-365 overall in the race, finishing the 8k in 24:55.4, joining Kemp and Cornelius with a career-best race. The Eagles began to cross the finish line in bunches as Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College) tailed closely behind Wiles in 145th in 24:58.8 while Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County) slotted in 154th with Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) right behind in 156th. Codyre and Garcia's respective performances earned them both a personal-best time for the 8k.
Much like his fellow freshman in Codyre and Garcia, Carson Vanderschaaf (Marquette, Mich./Marquette Senior) also ran a personal-best race, finishing in 26:14.2, shaving 23.7 seconds off his previous fastest, 26:37.9.
The EMU men wrapped up the day in 21st place out of 39 teams with four harriers finishing in the top 150 (Kemp, Cornelius, Wiles, Codyre).

Junior Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac) led the EMU pack during the Falcon Invitational as she individually finished in 52nd place completing the 6k course in 23:13.4. Behind Musta was freshman Destiny Rose (Boerne, Texas/Boerne Champion) in 60th place who finished in 23:38.9 for a new personal best after topping her previous best time of 24:27.5 at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational hosted by BGSU, Sept. 15, 2023.
Additionally, Elena Wheeler (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) recorded a new personal best finishing the 6k in 25:20.1, topping her previous best time of 26:44.9 set in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 16, 2022.
Freshman Sophie Emin competed in her first collegiate cross country race for the Eagles, finishing with a time of 25:20.7.
