ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's indoor track and field teams combined to win 11 of the 27 total events at the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan today, Jan. 7, in Ann Arbor. The total number of event wins, which came in the form of six first place finishes by the men, and five by the women, were the most of any team that competed at the event.

How it Happened
Up against the likes of host Michigan, the University of Toledo, Siena Heights University, Madonna University, and multiple unattached student-athletes, Eastern Michigan notched season-best performances in both the men's and women's 4x400m relay events, and saw four student-athletes record career-best marks in various events.

On the men's side, the 4x400m relay team of Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer), Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario-St. Anne's-Simon Fraser), Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton-Central Michigan) and Josh Flake  (Oak Park, Mich.-Oak Park) took first place with a time of 3:19.245, more than seven seconds faster than any other participating team.

On the track, it was Lander who stole those show in the 60m hurdles, cruising to a first place finish in just 8.37 seconds, the second-fastest time of any Eagle in that event this season. Although not his personal-best in the event, it marks the first win for Landers in any 60m hurdle event while at EMU.

In addition to his strong relay performance, Robinson also picked up a win in the 300m run, recording a time of 33.91 to take first place and give EMU yet another victory. The time was both a personal and team-best for Robinson and the Eagles this season.

In the field, Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) leaped a season-best 2.02m (6-foot-7-inches) in the high jump on the way to his event win. The finish fell just short of his career-best 2.06m jump that he recorded last season. Fellow Eagle Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves-American International) took home the long jump crown with a 7.29m (23-7) effort, the fourth-best of his career. Sadler picked up the sixth and final individual victory for the men, going for a personal-best 15.24m (50-0) in the triple jump.

Not to be outdone by the men's squad, the women also put together an impressive first place finish in the 4x400m relay, finishing with a time of 3:52.11 to secure the victory. The run was more than five seconds better than second-place finisher, Michigan, as Saraiah Walkes (Manatee Country, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door-Academy), Tijana Japundzic (Belgrade, Serbia-Technical School "New Belgrade"), Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer), and Noriyah Johnson  (Chania, Greece-Second General) combined for the effort.

It was a clean sweep in both fields in the 60m hurdles as well, where Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio St. Peter's) took home the first place finish on the women's side. The senior finished with a time of 8.66 seconds to secure the win. Walkes, who was part of the relay win, also took home first place in the 300m; the sophomore crossed the finish line in 38.77, a new personal-best time. Walkes' mark in the 300m was also a school record, bettering Jasmine Jones' standard of 39.17 in 2018.

The Eagles saw another personal-best performance in the women's 600m event, where Maleah Scott (Farmington, Minn.-Farmington) paced the field with a mark of 1:48.73. The sophomore's victory is the first in any event in her collegiate career.

In the high jump, Micah Martin (Clinton Twp., Mich.-L'anse Creuse) took home the win with a personal-best jump of 1.74m (5-08.5). It marked her first collegiate event after the freshman finished second in the same event at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 9, 2022. In that event, she registered a jump of 1.6m (5-3).
