Eagles set to open their first season of play at home, Feb. 16, against Niagara

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team has set its inaugural season schedule with the Eagles set to play a slate of 16 regular season games in 2023, Head Coach Sara Tisdale announced today, Jan. 3. The first of those contests is slated for Feb. 16, when the Purple Eagles of Niagara University come to town for a noon game in Ypsilanti.

Eastern is the fourth Mid-American Conference school to launch a lacrosse program with the Eagles joining the University of Akron, Central Michigan University, and Kent State University in the league. The MAC also has three affiliate members on its roster this year, including the University of Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris University, and Youngstown State University. Eastern will play all six teams during the season with an additional game slated against both Central Michigan and Detroit Mercy for a total of eight league games.

Noting the Schedule
» The schedule features 17 games with one exhibition and 16 regular season contests.
» The Eagles will play as members of the MAC, which is sponsoring the sport for the second year.
» Eastern opens the year with a home exhibition against visiting Grand Valley State University, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.
» During the regular season, the Eagles will play at home eight times, including four non-conference and four conference games, with identical totals played on the road.
» Along with the MAC, Eastern will face teams from the Atlantic 10, Atlantic Sun, Big East, Big South, Big Ten, and Mid-Atlantic Athletic (MAAC). The Eagles will play one school from each league with the exception of playing three teams from the Big East (Butler, Marquette, and Xavier).
» The game with Xavier, March 12, will mark a meeting of first-year teams as the Musketeers are playing their inaugural schedule in 2023 as well.
» Eastern will play its home games at Scicluna Field, the home of EMU Soccer and Lacrosse. The facility underwent a renovation over the summer with field turf being installed for both teams to utilize.

The Eagles will get the season underway with an exhibition game when they play host to the Lakers of Grand Valley State University at 1 p.m., Jan. 28, in Ypsilanti. The game, like all home games this year, are slated to be played at Scicluna Field with the location subject to change should weather dictate.

With an exhibition behind them, the Eagles will take the field for their first regular season game as they will play host to Niagara at noon. The game comes 1,198 days after the program was announced as the newest addition to Eastern Athletics, Nov. 6, 2019.

When the calendar changes to March, so will the frequency of games for the Green and White as the Eagles will play seven times in March and eight times in April. Eastern's first road contest is set for March 3 with a trip to Rock Hill, S.C., where they will meet the Eagles of Winthrop University in a noon game.

The back-and-forth continues from there as the Eagles play host to Delaware State University, March 7, before traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, to meet Xavier University, another first-year program, Nov. 12. Back at home, the Eagles will play host to St. Bonaventure University, March 14, before heading down the street into Ann Arbor, March 19, to face the University of Michigan. The month closes out with Eastern playing host to Marquette University, March 24, before facing Butler University, March 26, in Indianapolis, Ind.

One week later, the calendar changes to April and the competition changes to conference play with the Eagles playing their first two MAC games against two of their rivals. First, Eastern will play its first conference road game as it meets with the Titans at Detroit Mercy, April 1, at Titan Field. Then, on April 5, the Chippewas come to town for a 3 p.m. contest as Coach Tisdale will face her former team and the defending MAC Tournament champions.

Eastern returns to the road, April 8, with its second game against a league champion when it faces Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio, one year after the Penguins and Chippewas joined Robert Morris as co-champions of the MAC. Back at home, the Eagles will play host to Kent State, April 12, before returning to the road, this time to face Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa., April 19. The Eagles will return home, April 22, to face Akron at 11 a.m.

The final two games of the regular season will see repeat opponents as the Eagles will travel to face Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., April 26, before closing out the regular season at home, April 29, with a visit from Detroit Mercy.

With the regular season in the books, the top four finishers in the league standings will compete in the 2023 MAC Tournament with the top-seeded team playing host to the three games. The action gets underway May 4 with the semifinals and concludes May 6 with the championship game that will be used to determine the MAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship.
