WOLCOTT, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – After missing the first two tournament's of the season, Eastern Michigan University junior Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) made her presence felt in her return to the course, shooting a two-under 70 on the opening-day of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic, Sept. 26. Overall, Watson is tied for fifth in the star-studded field at the par 72, 6,367-yard Red Sky Golf Club - Fazio Course.
Pepperdine's Lauren Gomez sits on top the leaderboard with a five-under 67, a shot ahead of Washington State's Darcy Habgood and Mercer's Tracy Rodriguez. The Waves also lead the team standings by two strokes, carding a three-under 285. Fresno State (287), Colorado (287), Xavier (288), Kennesaw State (289), Delaware (289), Mercer (289) round out the top-five.
The Golfweek Red Sky Classic has been played at Red Sky's Fazio Course every year since 2010, except when the event was canceled in the fall of 2020 due to COVID-19. The tournament debuted in 2009 at Primm Valley Golf Club in Las Vegas. Pepperdine has appeared in the field every year, winning the title in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Four other times, the Waves finished with at least a share of second place.
How It Happened
Senior Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) added a 73 to tie for 27th, while sophomore Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) finished with a 74 with 45th place. Sophomore Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) and senior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) rounded out the scoring with a 76 and a 79, respectively.
