Gymnastics ranked ninth nationally in team GPA

ITHACA, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics program had 21 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-American status for the 2021-22 year by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA), the organization announced today, Aug. 10.

"We talk about putting academics first and I think the student athletes have proven their dedication in the classroom," Head Coach Katie Minasola said. "They amaze us coaches how they tackle so many things and excel, we are extremely proud of these athletes."

The team ranked ninth in the country out of the participating 76 institutions with a collective grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.7380. Only one Mid-American Conference program ranked higher, with Northern Illinois coming in one spot above the Eagles in eighth (3.7527).

Individually, the student-athletes to earn the honor are graduates Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens), Cali Harden (Superior Twp., Mich.-Saline), Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Charlotte Reynolds (Leominster, Mass.-Leominster), Caitlin Satler (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), seniors Hadyn Crossen (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), Hannah Hartung (Lincoln, Neb.-Lincoln East), Corey Melcher (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), Molly Parris (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson), Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind.-Indiana Connections Academy), Mayleigh Vanderbeek (Holland, Mich.-Zeeland East-Central Michigan), juniors Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Park Center), Katie Butler (Avon, Ohio-Magnificat), Jordan Jankowski (Frisco, Texas-Independence), Anna Grace McCullough (Birmingham, Ala.-Briarwood Christian), Sophia Rios (DeWitt, Mich.-DeWitt) and sophomores Gianna Antonio (Novi, Mich.-South Lyon East), Cassie Bergin (Islip Terrace, N.Y.-East Islip), Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and Emma Lewis (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central). Student Assistant Coach Brooke Hylek also earned the distinction.

Overall, there were 53 teams with a team GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, down from 58 teams last year. There were 228 (14.53%) student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA, and a record number of gymnasts – 1,077 (68.84% of all reporting gymnasts) with a 3.5 or better GPA, the most reported since 2008. This is the second year in a row where more than 1,000 Scholastic All-America team members were awarded.

"Congratulations on another amazing, record-breaking year of academic success for all of the student athletes, coaches and support staff," Melanie Hall, WCGA Chair of the Board and Head Coach at Cornell University, said. "To continually pursue excellence in both the classroom, as well as the gym, takes immense effort, preparation and time management and is truly inspiring. It is exciting to see the continued academic success of so many gymnasts across the country, in all divisions, year after year."

The Eagles return to the gym this fall in preparation for the upcoming 2023 season. To stay up to date with everything EMU Gymnastics go to EMUEagles.com, or follow us on Twitter (@EMUGym) and Instagram (@emugym).
