Baseball Falls to Kent State in Friday Doubleheader

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell on both occasions to Kent State University in Friday afternoon's doubleheader inside Schoonover Stadium, May 20.
In game one, junior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.-Maple Grove (North Iowa)) (1-5) got the ball to start for Eastern Michigan (21-33, 15-24 MAC) and took the loss.
In the batter's box, the Eagles were led by freshman Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day (Nebraska)), who got on base twice (two walks). Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) earned EMU's only hit of the contest.
In game two, sophomore Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater (Spring Arbor)) had two hits, but it was not enough to push EMU over the top in its 4-3 loss to the Golden Flashes.
Junior Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Eastern Michigan (21-34, 15-24 MAC). The right-hander went 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks, and striking out two. Sophomore Nick Chittum (Grosse Ile, Mich.-Grosse Ile) started the ballgame and went 5.2 innings, surrendering three runs, one earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out one.
At the plate, the Eagles were paced by Miller, who went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Freshman Coltrane Rubner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Stevenson) put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Dolney also chipped in for Eastern Michigan, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk.
How It Happened - Game 1
Eastern Michigan did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Eagles went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the sixth, when senior Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) made it into scoring position with two outs.
Game Notes - Game 1
» Volkers fanned nine Golden Flashes hitters. Volkers faced 25 Kent State hitters in the game, allowing two ground balls and five fly balls while striking out nine. The nine strikeouts and 6.0 IP are both career-highs for the right-hander.
» Kirk's base hit in game one extended his hitting streak to five games.
» Kauffman earned his first stolen base of the 2022 season. Kauffman has 13 stolen bags in his collegiate career.
How It Happened - Game 2
Trailing 3-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Eastern Michigan plated two runs, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Rubner.
The Eagles kept the deficit at 3-2 before tying the score in the eighth. Kirk came across to score the lone run of the inning for EMU, which brought the score level at 3-3. Kent State then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 4-3 win.
Game Notes - Game 2
» Eastern Michigan pitchers limited Kent State to just 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The staff faced 34 Kent State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out three.
» Miller led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. The run batted in is Miller's eighth of the season. Additionally, it is the sophomore's sixth multi-hit game of the season.
» Rubner's RBI was his third of the 2022 campaign. Furthermore, Kauffman's RBI was his second of the season and his 40th career RBI.
