EMU blasts four home runs and scores 15 runs to defeat Kent State

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) --The Eastern Michigan University baseball team finished its 2022 campaign with a bang, defeating Kent State University, 15-8, Saturday afternoon, May 21.

The Eagles (22-34, 16-24 MAC) put together 15 runs on 18 hits, including four home runs in the victory.

Senior Brady Huebbe (Peru, Ill.-La Salle-Peru (Northern Illinois)) went 3-for-5 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with six RBIs. Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) added to Huebbe's awesome power-hitting performance by going 4-for-5 with a home run and an RBI along with one walk. Senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trails)) also helped out for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Junior Zach Gillig (Valley Center, Kan.-Valley Center (Pratt C.C.)) (3-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Eastern Michigan. The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, had no walks, and struck out two.

How It Happened
The Eagles scored in six different innings on the way to victory. Eastern Michigan scored in the first inning and never looked back after a one-run fly out off the bat of Huebbe.

Game Notes
» The Eagles got two home runs off the bat of Huebbe. It is Huebbe's third multi-homer game of the season. The outfielder finishes his senior season with 11 round-trippers.
» Additionally, Huebbe drove in six runs for Eastern Michigan, a career-high for the senior. Huebbe finishes the season with 45 RBIs on the year.
» Kirk led all batters with four hits on five at-bats on Saturday. Kirk's 17th home run of the season leads the Mid-American Conference.
» Bault earned season-highs in both hits (3) and RBIs (2), including the fifth home run of his senior season.
» Freshman Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day (Nebraska)) totaled three hits and two RBIs in the victory. Dolney will finish the 2022 season reaching base safely in the final 11 games of the season, the longest streak on the squad.
» Eastern Michigan's highest-scoring inning was the second, when it pushed five runs across. It is the 22nd time this season the Eagles have totaled four-or-more runs in an inning.
» The 15 runs scored is just the fourth time this season Eastern has amassed 15-or-more runs in a contest.
» EMU earned a total of 18 hits and five Eagles had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» The Eastern Michigan pitching staff combined to strike out 12 Kent State hitters. EMU pitchers faced 40 Kent State hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out 12.
» Eastern Michigan went 6-for-11 (.545) with runners in scoring position. 

Historical Notes
» With its 12 strikeouts of Golden Flashes hitters, Eastern Michigan's pitching staff officially set a new school record for strikeouts in a season (416). The previous high, set in 2012, was 389.
» As a team, the Eagles belted 81 home runs in the 2022 season. That mark is good for third in EMU program history in a single season. The Eastern Michigan team in 2009 launched 100 homers, a program record.
» Kirk's 17 round-trippers in 2022 is tied for fourth all-time in EMU program history in a single season.
