PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) – After finishing sixth last year, the Eastern Michigan University rowing program bounced back to take third overall at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships today, May 15, on the Cooper River.
For the Eagles, the third-place finish ties for the highest finish in program history as the team earned bronze in 2016 and 2019 as well. Additionally, the team tallied 26 points, the most ever for EMU at the CAA Championships. Northeastern University won for the eighth consecutive season, earning 38 points.
How It Happened
The Third Varsity Eight boat took fifth in the first race of the championships, crossing the finish line in 7:26.968. EMU's Varsity Four crew also notched fifth with a time of 7:46.621 in a tight race. Eastern then placed fourth in the Second Varsity Eight race, holding off UC San Diego and finishing in 7:00.084.
The highlight of the day was the Green and White's First Varsity Eight boat, which fought hard the entire 2,000 meters for third, helping the team take third overall to tie for the highest finish in program history. For their efforts, sophomores Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven) and Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanee) were named to the All-CAA team. This marked Boerson's second time earning the honor and the first for Hinojosa.
Quoting Head Coach Kemp Savage
"The whole staff was really happy with the performance in all boats today. Everyone either outpaced or met their seed. The 1V had a really great race placing third and starting to challenge 2nd in the end. We finally found the consistency in the boats we've been waiting for all year. Now it's time for a couple weeks off and then back to work so we can focus on winning next year."
Quoting Assistant Coach Delaney McGuire
"The 2V executed their race plan really well although we were disappointed to come up short on the medal stand. We're excited to return everyone next year and see what we can do."
Quoting Assistant Coach Nicole Marek
"The 1V4 had a really exciting race as it came down to a tenth of a second between them and fourth place. We've had some solid weeks training and it was great to see the progression in our final race of the season."
Quoting Assistant Coach Annie Cantu
"The 3V8 made significant leaps in progression over the couple weeks leading up to the championships. Our consistency and focus definitely showed up on the racecourse today. I am very proud of their progress and excited to see what next year will bring."

Every boat fought hard until the end and the result was the most points by EMU ever at the @CAASports Championships. 🦅
