The 2022-23 season marks Nicole Marek’s fourth season as an assistant coach for Eastern Michigan. Additionally, Marek was elevated to Head Novice Coach in the summer of 2021.
In 2021-22, Marek aided the Eagles to a third overall finish at the CAA Championships. The team tallied 26 points, the most ever for EMU at the championships since the program joined the conference in 2012. Additionally, members of that Eagles First Varsity Eight squad, Emma Boersen and Chloe Hinojosa, were named to the 2022 All-CAA team.
Seven Green and White boats took home first place finishes during the 2021-22 campaign, including three First Varsity Eight squads, two Second Varsity Eight teams and two First Varsity Four groups. Additionally, Marek led the First Novice Four boat to a first-place finish over Duquesne on April 9.
Even though the season was shortened to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eastern Michigan still found success. EMU’s boats recorded top times against Duquesne and Dayton on Ford Lake, in two of the three home regattas during the 2021 season. Against the Dukes, the Eagles posted first-place finishes in all three races with the First Varsity Eight crossing the finish line in 7:20.31. To close out the year, Eastern Michigan placed sixth at the CAA Championships with 17 points. The Eagles' best finish of the regatta came in the Second Varsity Eight race, where EMU finished in fourth place with a time of 7:00.122. Additionally, sophomore Emma Boersen earned All-CAA honors.
During her first season at EMU, Marek aided the Eagles to three race wins and four program-best finishes. Eastern claimed the top spots in the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four races at the Head of the Grand, while also defeating Michigan State for the program's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2008. The Eagles then posted a program-best fifth-place finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles, and program-best second and sixth place finishes in the Novice Eight and Varsity Eight races at the Head of the Hooch, respectively. The Novice Four also took first place at the Head of the Hooch.
Marek was a standout student-athlete at Michigan State University, where she was an All-Big Ten selection and CRCA All-American honorable mention during her time with the Spartans. Her 6k and 2k times rank in the program’s all-time top-10 records.
In 2018, Marek was named the USRowing Ernestine Bayer Woman of the Year for her outstanding contributions to rowing during her time at Michigan State.
Marek also excelled academically, earning Michigan State University’s Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2018 along with Academic All-American, All-Big Ten, and CRCA National Scholar Athlete accolades during her time with the Spartans.
Marek was invited to train with the United States U23 National Team in 2018 and competed at the US Trials at Lake Mercer.
The Grosse Ile, Mich. native graduated from Michigan State in 2019 with a degree in music education.
