Baseball Drops Series-Opener at Miami

Eastern returns to the diamond Sunday for a doubleheader against the RedHawks
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan baseball team dropped its series-opening contest to Miami University, 11-5, Saturday afternoon at McKie Field.
Senior Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) (1-4) got the ball to start for Eastern Michigan (10-16, 6-7 MAC) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits, allowing two walks, and striking out six.
Senior Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) led the hit barrage for the Eagles, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame. Freshman Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville Garber) provided a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
How It Happened
The Eagles were trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board.
The RedHawks broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the eighth inning when the Eagles got back on the scoreboard. Senior Shane Easter came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the RedHawks.
Miami expanded their lead to 11-4 before the Eastern Michigan offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 11-5 in the ninth. The Eagles scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Hugo. The ballgame ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short.

» Hugo led the Eagles' offense tallying two hits on the afternoon along with two RBIs and a run scored. The freshman recorded his fifth multi-hit game of the season and his second multi-RBI game of the 2022 campaign.
» Junior Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford (Toledo)) finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk. The hit extends Kirk's hitting streak to nine games. In that nine-game span, the outfielder has totaled 11 hits, seven RBIs, and three home runs.
» Seniors Warkentin and Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) each tallied a hit in the Saturday matinee extending their hitting streaks to four games, respectively.
» House recorded six strikeouts against the RedHawks, a which ties his career-high. He has hit the mark three times this season, most recently in EMU's game against Akron, March 26.
