The Eagles fell to Miami, 4-3, before rallying to best Dayton, 5-2
OXFORD & MIAMISBURG, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team split doubleheader action in Ohio Sunday, April 3. Eastern lost a tough match to Miami University 4-3, before coming back to top the University of Dayton, 5-2. The Eagles are now 14-12 on the spring season, and 2-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
"Once again we put ourselves behind the eightball by losing doubles, and it ended up coming down to the last match on the court, " said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Unfortunately, it didn't go our way and we were just a few points either way from clinching the win. We played with great heart and effort but just couldn't get the result we wanted."
Wiseman later added, "Despite being tired and having some emotional let down after the Miami loss, we did a good job of manufacturing some energy, and we were able to get the doubles point and carry that over to singles to get the win over Dayton."
How It Happened
Against Miami, Eastern failed to get the doubles point but saw success from individuals in singles play. Freshman Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-College of Commerce and Economics) earned a hard-fought win at No. 2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. In the four spot, redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) also won in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while classmate Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) defeated her RedHawk opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6. The Eagles could not pull off the upset, falling 4-3.
Eastern Michigan turned the day around against Dayton, earning the doubles point decidedly. The freshmen Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Vichare won 6-1, at one, while Popma and redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) earned a 6-2 victory. In singles action, Brichackova (3-6, 7-5, 1-0), Ganesan (6-3, 6-2), and Pommiers (6-1, 6-1), all earned wins at two, five, and six, respectively. Redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) also defeated her Flyer opposition, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot, capping off a 3-1 weekend for the Portugal native. The Green and White closed the weekend with a 5-2 victory over UD.
