Sprinters and Hurdlers Soar in Saturday Meet

Eastern records three top-10 program marks
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Throwers started off the weekend strong, but Eastern Michigan University's sprinters and hurdlers stole the show on the final day of the Jesse Owens Classic today, April 23, at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
"We had some nice breakthroughs in some event areas which was great," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "Kadian Clarke continues to rewrite the record books on the throws side. We're looking forward to continued improvement as a team as we build towards the MAC meet."
How It Happened
The quartet of freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door Academy), junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), sophomore Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Morehead State)), and senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) produced a 45.14 clip for second in the 4x100. The effort is the sixth-fastest time in program history, just .05 seconds shy of cracking the top five.
The men's 4x100 captured the event title in 40.43, ran by sophomores Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)), Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory), Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron), and senior Richie Sadler (Greenville, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)).
"We had great weather for the two-day meet," said Associate Head Coach Chris Best. "This weekend a lot of student-athletes got the opportunity to compete two days in a row for conferences simulation. The hurdlers had a solid weekend, as well as the men's and women's 4x100 relays. Things are coming together as we get closer to conference."
In the 110m hurdles, Williamson recorded the third-fastest in the EMU record book with a blazing 13.81 time. Junior Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) had a great outing as well, finishing seventh with a season-best time of 14.42.
Meanwhile, classmate Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) clocked in at 13.64 in the 100H, placing her ninth in school history. Coming into the meet, Wade's previous best was a 13.87-second effort at last year's Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 8.
"This was just the kind of meet we needed going into the final stretch of the season," noted Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts. "We had some great performances, including many season and personal bests, and I'm excited to see what the next few weeks bring as we get closer to MACs!"
