HOLLAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 22-24, hosted by the University of Toledo at Stone Oak Country Club. The three-day event will consist of 54 holes on the par-72, 6,158-yard course for the 10 MAC schools that sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.

The Eagles enter the tournament with the fifth lowest four-player team scoring average in program history at 306.3. Overall, Eastern Michigan has won three tournaments this season, including most recently a championship showing at the Lady Jaguar Invitational, April 16-17. EMU has also hoisted the trophy at the Golden Grizzly Invitational, Sept. 26-27, 2021, and the Shirley Spork Invitational, Oct. 4-5, 2021. It is just the fifth time (2006-07, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2019-20, and 2021-22) in program history that the squad has won at least three events during a single season.

Individually, sophomore Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) leads the team with an average of 75.92. Freshman Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) follows with a 76.04 season average, while junior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) has put together a solid campaign of her own, scoring an average of 78.48 this year.

Fourth-year Head Coach Stephanie Jennings and the Eagles look to spoil Kent State's run at history. The Golden Flashes have won 22-straight league championships, winning the 2021 tournament by 36 strokes after shooting an 878 (269-286-296).

The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 45 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Northern Illinois (154), Central Michigan (169), Eastern Michigan (181), Akron (186), Toledo (191), Western Michigan (215), Bowling Green (219), Ball State (221), and Ohio (235).

Continuous improvement was the story for EMU at the 2021 MAC Championships. The Green and White notched a 309 during the final round to finish in fifth place with a cumulative score of 945 (323-313-309) on the par-72, 6,277-yard Silver Lake Country Club course. Of the 10 teams participating in the championship, Eastern was the only one to post round over round improvement.

Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) carded birdies on No. 7, 10, and 11 for a one-over 73 and her fourth consecutive top-20 finish of the season. Overall, she became EMU's highest finisher at the league's championship event since 2018 with a tie for 12th with a 232 (81-78-73).

EMU has been the most likely candidate to challenge Kent State for the top spot at the event, as the Eagles' seven runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship since 2003 are the most of any team in the league. The Green and White have placed second in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015.

Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Toledo (2006, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019), Ball State (2010, 2012), Northern Illinois (2017, 2021), and Western Michigan (2004) are the only other teams to record a second-place finish in the history of the tournament.

The winner of the 2022 MAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional round, May 9-11, at one of the six regional locations. The possible sites include The Championship Course at UNM (Albuquerque, N.M.), U-M Golf Course  (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Karsten Creek Golf Club (Stillwater, Okla.), Seminole Legacy Golf Club (Tallahassee, Fla.), Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif.), and the Vanderbilt Legends Club (Franklin, Tenn.).

In November, the NCAA had announced the move to a six-regional format effective with the spring championship. Each of the six regional sites will now feature 12 teams and six individuals, with the top four teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) qualifying for the championships, which will be held for the second-straight year at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 20-25.

With the move to six regional sites from the previous four-site format, 72 teams will still qualify for regional play, with the number of individuals not on an advancing team increasing from 24 to 36.

The MAC Championship will begin Friday with EMU's tee times starting at 10:40 a.m.

Live scoring will be available via Golfstat. The four lowest scores of the team will count each day as a team total.
