CARMEL, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team posted a dominant performance en route to a first place finish Sunday, April 17, at the Lady Jaguar Invitational on the par 72, 5,921-yard Plum Creek Golf Club course. EMU carded a four-player score of 585 (292-293) to top its next closest competitor by 16 strokes, IUPUI (301-300=600). The 36-hole mark of 585 tied the school record previously set at the Low Country Invitational, March 2-3, 2020.

The team championship is the third of the 2021-21 campaign for the Eagles after winning the Golden Grizzly Invitational, Sept. 26-27, 2021, and the Shirley Spork Invitational, Oct. 4-5, 2021. It marked the first time since 2019-20 and just the fifth time (2006-07, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2019-20, and 2021-22) in program history that the squad has won at least three events during a single-season.  Overall, the victory marked the 28th title in school-history and the sixth under Head Coach Stephanie Jennings.

How It Happened
Sophomore Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) notched her first collegiate medalist honor with a six-under 138 (69-69). Her total ranks as the lowest 36-hole tally in EMU history, shattering the mark previously of 141 (72-69) set by Emily Podzielinski at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 19-20, 2009.

Aided by five birdies yesterday, Watson held a two stroke lead headed in to Sunday's round. The round of 69 is tied for seventh-lowest in EMU history. She was just as good on Sunday, where she again fired a three-under-par to complete consecutive rounds in the red for the first time during her collegiate career. This time, she fired six birdies, which tied for the team lead for EMU. After finding red on three of the first four holes of the front nine, Watson faced adversity, bogeying three straight as the fifth, sixth, and seventh holes, respectively. She fought back to card two pars before making the turn. Nearly perfect on the back, Watson did not go over par in the final nine holes of play. After two pars to open her final nine, she put together a stretch of three straight birdies to get herself to the three-under mark. She closed out her round with four pars to easily capture the leaderboard crown.

Overall, five Eagles finished inside the top-25. Freshman Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) garnered her first career top-five showing with a career-low 149 (71-78). Freshman Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) tied for fifth with a 150 (77-73) for her third top-five finish of the season.

Junior Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) turned in a seller 73 to close the weekend 23rd with a 156 (83-73). Sophomore Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy) finished in a tie for 31st to close out the team scoring with a 160 (75-85).

The other four EMU student-athletes also took part in the tournament as individuals. Sophomore Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) notched a 155 (70-75) for a tie for 20th and junior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) posted a 159 (82-77) for 27th. Meanwhile, sophomore Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) placed 35th at 161 (81-80) and redshirt sophomore Adeline Lau (Sa Rawak, Malaysia-SMK Bintulu-Michigan Dearborn) closed with a 171 (86-85) in a tie for 45th.

The victory was also special as it came on the heels of the passing of legendary EMU women's golfer Shirley Spork, who passed away Tuesday, April 12, at the age of 94. A true pioneer, Spork was one of 13 Founders of the LPGA in 1950. A decade later, Spork almost single-handedly created the LPGA Teaching & Club Pro Division.
