CARMEL, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team was outstanding in the first round of the Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by IUPUI at the Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. today, April 16. Led by a career effort from sophomore Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland), the team fired a tournament-best four-over, 292, and holds a five-shot advantage on the field heading into the final 18 holes of play.
As a team, Eastern's 292 is its best single-round score of the spring season, and its second-best overall during the 2021-22 campaign. The Eagles fired a first-round 290 at the Shirley Spork Invitational, hosted by the team at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Oct. 4. EMU paces a field of seven teams, as is currently five shots ahead of second-place Butler (+9). The Eagles are an incredible 39 shots ahead of Northern Kentucky, who sits in seventh, at 43-over-par. Eastern's team total ties for the eighth lowest single-round score in program history. EMU has shot a 292 five times previously. The program recorded a low round of 286 in round three of the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22, 2015.
Individually, Watson was incredible for the Green and White. Aided by five birdies, she shot a career-best three-under, 69, her first under-par effort of her career. That effort leads all other players in the field by at least two strokes. Additionally, the score ties for seventh-lowest in EMU history. EMU's all-time record is a 66, fired by Kelsey Murphy at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 22, 2015. Teammate Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) was also outstanding in day one of the event. The freshman fired a one-under, 71, and is tied for second. That total bests her previous low of 74 by three strokes. Overall, four Eagles reside in the tournament's top-21 after the first round of play.
How It Happened
After beginning her round with consecutive pars on the front nine, it did not take long for Watson to get into the red on Saturday. The Buckeye State native got the scoring started early with a birdie on the par-three third hole, which played at 150 yards today. After a bogey on the very next hole, Watson went on a tear. She birdied three of her next four en route to a three-under first nine effort. Consistent on the back nine, she utilized seven pars on her way to an even second set. Ultimately, she finished her 18-hole effort three strokes under par, her best career mark.
DiMarcantonio found the red in plenty of places as well. A birdie on the par-five, 455-yard second hole went on the card as one of four under-par scores of the day for the Canadian-born Eagle. She had two birdies on each nine to help complete her 71.
Sophomore Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy) got in on the career efforts as well, firing a three-over 75 to finish the day tied for 14th and match her single-best effort. Freshman Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) was stout as well, putting up five-over 77 to head to the clubhouse tied for 21st.
Four Eagles were also playing as individuals. Sophomore Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) notched an 80, sophomore Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) added an 81, junior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) posted and 82, and redshirt sophomore Adeline Lau (Sa Rawak, Malaysia-SMK Bintulu-Michigan Dearborn) closed with an 86.
