Distance runners record six personal-bests in California meets

AZUSA/WALNUT, Calif. & ADRIAN, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Green and Yellow harriers of the Eastern Michigan University track & field team made their presence known at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays yesterday, April 14. Meanwhile, back in Michigan, the Eagles won five events at the Don Kleinow Invitational on the same day.

How It Happened
On the campus of Azusa Pacific University, junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) highlighted the night for the Eagles with a personal-best 5000m time of 13:32.47, an Icelandic national record. The performance beats former Eagle Hlynur Andresson's 13:41.06 effort from last summer. Additionally, Magnusson's 5K time is the second-fastest time in program history.

Classmate Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) registered EMU's first PR of the day, clocking in at 17:03.99 in her 5000m race. For Ivanko, that is a 37.82-second improvement from her 17:41.81 time set last year, April 22.

In the same event, sophomore Josh Hill (Amherst, Ohio-Amherst Steele) produced a time of 14:09.76, topping his 14:16.49 performance last month at the Raleigh Relays, March 24. Junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya (Middle Tennessee State)) capped off the day for Eastern in the 5K, finishing in 16:30.20 for eighth.

Up the road at the Mt. SAC Relays, sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) crushed his previous-best 10,000m time of 29:49.97 by turning in a 29:24.57 showing. Earlier in the day, senior Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln) recorded a PB for the second consecutive meet in the steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 8:50.93, 20.87 seconds faster than his 9:11.90 effort, also set at the Raleigh Relays, March 25.

Back in the Mitten State, senior Joe Duff (Croswell, Mich.-Crosswell-Lexington (Concordia University)) set a stadium record at SHU with a javelin throw of 63.05m for first place. For Duff, his mark is the sixth-furthest in program history. Elsewhere in the field, senior Dahndray Holmes (Clarksville, Tenn.-Rossview (Highland C.C.)) and sophomore Nya Lakin (Dacula, Ga.-Mill Creek) both won the  triple jump with marks of 14.22m and 11.43m, respectively.

On the track, senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) captured the 100m dash crown with a time of 12.18. In the hurdles, juniors Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) won the 100H (14.39), Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) took the men's 110H (14.54), and Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child) was victorious in the 400H (1:04.88).
