Tennis Goes Perfect in Friday Doubleheader; Eagles Defeat MAC Leader

Eastern bested Ball State, 4-3, and Wayne State, 4-3

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team went undefeated in doubleheader action Friday, April 1. The Eagles handed Ball State University its first loss in Mid-American Conference play, besting the Cardinals 4-3. In the evening, the Green and White topped Wayne State with a score of 4-3.

"This was a tremendous effort against a great opponent," said Jayson Wiseman. "Even though we dropped the doubles point again, we did an amazing job of keeping focused and rallying back to take the match. We showed a ton of mental toughness getting three-set wins at both #1 and #3. Emma was also stellar, winning 11 games in a row after falling behind 5-2. I am very proud of the effort and heart we showed today."

"Wayne State is one of the toughest DII teams around and every time we play them they make a very tough match of it," added Wiseman. "We were fortunate to get the doubles point and quick win and #1 singles, then grind out a couple tough three-set matches."

How It Happened
Against Ball State, the freshman pairing of Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnaszium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-College of Commerce and Economics) earned the win after moving up to the No. 1 spot, 6-2. The duo improved to 16-3 this spring, and hold a five-match win streak. EMU was unable to earn the doubles point, and entered singles play down 1-0. Redshirt sophomore Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) struck first, topping her Cardinal opponent, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 6. Vichare won next for the Eagles, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2. Redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) applied pressure on BSU when she won in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at one. Brichackova earned the winning point at No. 3, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0.

Eastern kept the momentum rolling into doubles against Wayne State with redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) winning first, 6-2, at No. 2. Sealing the doubles point was Pommiers and redshirt junior Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem College)) at No. 3, 6-2. In singles, Pelayo once earned a victory at No. 1 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Ganesan pulled out a win at the No. 4 slot, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Lastly, Piatek sealed the deal for EMU, bouncing back to top her Warrior opponent, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
