The Eagles defeated Northwood, 7-0, before falling to Michigan State, 6-1
MIDLAND & EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team went 1-1 in doubleheader action Friday, Feb. 18. Eastern started the day with a 7-0 win at Northwood University. In the evening, the Eagles traveled to Michigan State, losing 6-1.
"Northwood is a very solid team with some very talented players," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a good job of going out and being aggressive early, playing the game style we wanted, and setting a tone."
Wiseman later added, "Playing Michigan State is always a tall task, but it is great preparation for conference play, and to gauge our level against top level competition. Even though we lost 6-1, we had a number of opportunities in both doubles and singles that could have made this a much closer match. I give a ton of credit to Luisa for getting the straight-set win over a two-time Big Ten player, and for getting our first point over a power five school during my tenure at EMU."
How It Happened
Eastern Michigan earned a 7-0 win at Northwood, with the No. 3 doubles pairing of freshmen Asia Allen (Sanford, Fla.-Seminole (Rio Grande Valley)) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-College of Commerce and Economics) winning, 6-2, followed by redshirt junior Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem University)) and redshirt sophomore Emma-Lou Pommiers's (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) 6-3 victory, securing the doubles point. The Eagles never looked back in singles as Piatek, redshirt senior Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)), and Allen earned their third wins of the season, from the four, five, and six spots, respectively, and are all now 3-0.
EMU fell in East Lansing, 6-1. The Eagles did not secure the doubles point, but saw a strong performance from redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)). Pelayo defeated a two-time All-Big Ten selection in Mary Lewis at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) battled for three sets, finishing 6-4, 3-6, 9-11 at No. 4, but could not come away with the win. Brichackova is now 9-1 in singles action this season as her nine-match win streak comes to an end.
