VALPARAISO & NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team went 2-0 Sunday, Feb. 13, capping off a long weekend in the Midwest. Eastern defeated Valparaiso University, 6-1, before besting Holy Cross College (Ind.), 7-0. The Eagles return home above .500, with a 5-4 overall record in dual matches this spring.
"This was a very contentious match with a lot of ups and down," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman at Valparaiso. "We were just fortunate to claim the doubles point and then grind our way to the victory."
"This was a great team win from top to bottom," Wiseman added after the Holy Cross match. "It was great to try some different lineup combinations, and have different people step up to get the win."
How It Happened
At Vaplaraiso, redshirt seniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) earned their second doubles win of the season, 6-3. That performance at No.2, partnered with a 6-3 win by the No. 2 duo of freshmen Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics), earned Eastern the doubles point. From then on, the Eagles kept their foot on the gas, battling to a 6-1 win over the Crusaders. Three-of-five singles win came in three sets, including Pelayo in the No. 1 spot, winning 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 12-10. Brichackova also kept her streak alive, winning at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), to become 8-0 in dual matches.
Against Holy Cross College (Ind.), the Eagles swept the competition, 7-0, and saw freshman Asia Allen (Sanford, Fla.-Seminole (Riio Grande Valley)) earn her first wins of the season. Allen, partnered with redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) at No. 3, won their matchup 6-2. The freshman followed that performance with a win at No. 6 in singles, 6-0, 6-2. Redshirt junior Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) and Whitney each earned their second singles wins of the season from the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Brichackova again pushed the undefeated streak, this time earning the win from the two slot, 6-1, 6-3.
