MILWAUKEE, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team topped the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on the road, 4-3, Saturday, Feb. 12. Eastern moves to 3-4 over in the spring season.
"This was a roller coaster of a match," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We were down early after doubles, but were within a hairs width of clinching the match early, only to have it slip away and come down to No. 1 singles, in a 3-3 match. Luisa made one of the most remarkable comebacks I've been a part of as a coach. From down 4-1 in the third set, she rallied for the win to clinch the match in a tiebreaker. She showed tremendous heart and toughness."
How It Happened
Eastern Michigan was able to earn a win in doubles from the No. 3 pairing of freshmen Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics), who won 6-2. The duo moves to 6-1 in duals this season. The Eagles were unable to secure the doubles point, entering singles down 1-0.
The Eagles picked it up in singles play with their first win coming from redshirt sophomore Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sir-l'Adour-Dominique Saint Pau) at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-1, Brichackova struck next, defeating her Panther opponent, 6-2, 6-4, and extending her winning streak to seven straight. The freshman is a perfect 7-0 this season in singles, mainly competing in the No. 4 spot. Redshirt Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) kept the comeback alive, topping her No. 3 adversary, 6-3, 6-3. The final match-clinching point came from redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) battling back to win in three sets from the one spot, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6. The Green and White came from behind to best Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 4-3.
