CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team split its doubleheader Friday, Feb. 11, against UIC and the University of Chicago. Eastern was bested by the Flames, 4-3, in the morning match but turned it around in the evening, defeating the Maroons, 4-3. The Eagles are now 2-4 overall this spring season.
"UIC was a tough match to lose, especially the way we lost it," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a great job of taking the doubles point, and coming back from a set down at both No. 4 and No. 6 to get wins on those courts. We just couldn't quite get the job done to win that last match and get the win. "
"It was definitely good to be on the right side of a 4-3 result," Wiseman later added "After losing the doubles point we had to climb for the win against one of the best DIII schools in the country. Sabina [Brichachoka] and Prerna [Vichare] came up with big victories after falling behind early, and Vasavi [Ganesan] and Emma-Lou [Pommiers] did a great great job of taking their matches in straight sets. ."
How It Happened
Against UIC, Eastern's first win came at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 showing by redshirt senior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education). EMU clinched the doubles point when the No. 3 pairing of freshmen Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India-Narsee Monjee College of Economics and Commerce) won a hard-fought match, 7-6. The duo went on to win the tiebreaker, 7-3. Brichackova, in the No. 4 singles spot, continued her winning streak, making it five in-a-row to start the spring season. The freshman came back after being down a set to keep the streak alive, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Redshirt sophomore Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) also secured a point for the Eagles in the No. 6 slot, besting her competition 6-7, 1-6, 6-0.
In the evening matchup against Chicago, the freshman No. 3 pairing earned their second doubles win of the day, 6-2, however, Eastern Michigan was unable to secure another victory and earn the doubles point. Eastern turned it up in singles action, with wins from Vichare (7-5, 6-2), Brichackova at (6-7, 6-2, 6-2), Ganesan (6-3, 6-3), and Pommiers (6-1, 6-2), in the two, four, five, and six spots, respectively.
