Eagles Prepare for GVSU Holiday Open

12/8/2022 12:34:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Meet marks first full-team competition of the 2022-23 indoor season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs will compete as a full team for the first time this season at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open, Dec. 9, in Allendale, Mich. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at GVSU's Kelly Family Sports Center, and can be streamed live with a subscription on FloTrack.

Eastern opened up the indoor season by sending two distance runners to Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Open, Dec. 3. There, senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) set the Icelandic indoor national record for the 5000m with a time of 14:01.29, good for 82nd. He was bested in the meet by junior Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College), who set a new personal-best with a time of 14:00.17, placing 79th.

Eastern is coming off of a strong 2021-22 season, including a Mid-American Conference Men's Indoor team championship. They return the MAC Performer of the Year in Magnusson, who earned MAC titles in the 3,000m and 5,000m. Senior Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor-Barton C.C.) also returns after winning the 60m hurdle MAC Championship last season.

Graduate student Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) was the MAC runner-up in the weight throw one year ago. His 22.62m toss at the MAC Indoor Championships was enough to push him onto the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mar. 11, where he earned Second Team All-America honors with an 11th-place finish.

Additionally, the women's team took second place at the MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26, 2022, behind the 4x400m relay team's MAC title. Eastern returns three of the four members of that relay team in Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer), Mair Edwards (Basingstoke England, The Costello School), and Noriyah Johnson (Chania, Greece-Second General-Abilene Christian)
