Magnusson Sets Iceland Indoor National Record

BOSTON, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field program opened up its indoor season in historic fashion, with senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) setting the Icelandic indoor national record with his 14:01.29 5,000m run at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Open, hosted by Boston University, Dec. 3.

"It was exciting to kick off the indoor season in Boston," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) had an eight second personal best and although Vinny didn't have the race he hoped for, he still set an indoor national record for Iceland. It was a good experience for our guys and we're looking forward to getting the rest of the team in action next weekend."

Eastern sent two runners to the prestigious season-opening run in sophomore Gualter and Magnusson, who both competed in the 5,000m race. Gualter set a new career-best with a 14:00.17 clip, good for 79th place. Magnusson's historic run placed him just behind Gualter, finishing in 82nd place.

Historical Notes
» With today's run, Magnusson now owns the Icelandic indoor and national records in the 5,000m. He set the overall national record with an outdoor run of 13:32.47 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 14, 2022.
