Eastern Readies for Cross Country Regionals

EMU travels to Terre Haute, Ind. for regional meet, Nov. 11
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program will compete against the best of the best at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 9. The regional championship will be held at Indiana State University's LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6K race will kick the day off at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 10K at 11 a.m.
The Eagles are hot off of a strong showing at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 29, where both the men's and women's teams placed third in the conference. Three EMU harriers earned All-MAC honors at the conference run, with first-teamers Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) and Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) joined by second-teamer Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State).
One year ago at the regional meet, Eastern Michigan battled hard. The women's team, led by an 82nd-place finish from Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands-American School of the Hague), placed 19th in the 30-team field. The men's team placed seventh overall behind top-20 finishes by Magnusson (18th) and Gualter (19th). Additionally, Magnusson and Gualter earned All-Region honors for their strong runs.
At all regional meets, the top-two teams from each race automatically qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Nov. 19. Individuals can qualify for the national meet in Stillwater, Okla. by claiming the top spot in their respective race. Others will wait to see if they have earned an at-large bid.
The top-two men's teams in the Great Lakes Region are Wisconsin and Notre Dame, according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings. Currently, Eastern Michigan ranks 11th.The women's region is led by Notre Dame and Toledo, per USTFCCCA. Eastern Michigan sits at 12th.
