TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – For the second time this season, Eastern Michigan University defensive end Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) has been named the Breakout Player of the Week by the East-West Shrine Bowl, the organization announced today, Nov. 28.

Ramirez previously earned the honor following his historic, four-sack performance against Western Michigan University, Oct. 8.

Ramirez put together another outstanding day in the opponent's backfield against the Chippewas of Central Michigan University Friday, Nov. 25, in EMU's regular season finale. The defensive lineman sacked CMU's quarterbacks three times, just one shy of his single-game high 4.0 he recorded at WMU, giving him 7.0 of his 12.0 sacks against Michigan MAC schools. His 12.0 sacks for 79-yards puts Ramirez in first place in the nation in total sacks. Furthermore, the Florida native's performance in the Eagles' victory now ranks the defensive end first in school history with 12.0 sacks in a single season. Ramirez now sits in second place in program history for career sacks with 20.5. He is only the fourth player since 1998 to record double-digit sacks in a single season for Eastern Michigan.

EMU's 38-19 win gave the program their first ever Co-MAC West Championship and allowed the program to win the Michigan MAC Trophy for the first time since 2012.

After the Eagles' bowl game, Ramirez will take part in the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl, college football's longest-running all-star game. The event, which Ramirez accepted an invitation to in early November, will take place Thursday, Feb. 2, inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.
