Thompson earns spot on MAC All-Freshman Team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2022 postseason awards for women's soccer today, Nov. 1, with two members of the Eastern Michigan University program earning accolades. In a vote of the conference's coaches, sophomore Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic) was selected to the 2022 All-MAC Second Team while rookie Hannah Thompson (Schoolcraft, Mich.-Schoolcraft) was voted to the 2022 MAC All-Freshman Team.
Historically, the selection for O'Farrell is her first MAC accolade and makes her the first all-conference selection for the Eagles since both Amanda Cripps and Sabrina McNeill earned first-team honors in 2020. The 37th different Eastern player to earn All-MAC honors in program history, O'Farrell's accolade is the 65th first or second-team award earned by a member of the program. On the rookie side of things, Thompson is the 25th different Eastern player to be named to the MAC's all-freshman squad and the first since Lexy Alston earned the honor in 2020.
O'Farrell, who entered her sophomore season with three points on one goal and one assist in her career, took off in 2022 as she led the team in both points (15) and goals (six) while ranking tied for second in assists (three). Appearing in all 18 matches and earning a starting position in 17 of those contests, O'Farrell's point total was one the highest for the team since the 2020 season and placed her among the top 10 in several statistical categories in the MAC at the end of the regular season, including tying for eighth in total points, sixth in goals scored, and first in shots with 54. A goal scorer in the first and last matches of the season (both of which were 2-2 draws), O'Farrell tallied a career-high four points on two goals scored against Ohio, Oct. 2, 2022, making her the second player on the team to record multiple goals in the same contest in 2022. With her play, the Eagles improved in the standings as Eastern finished tied for ninth in the MAC after placing 11th in 2021.
Thompson turned in a stellar rookie campaign as she finished the season with 10 points, four goals, and two assists. One of three Eastern players with double-digit points - the first time it has happened since 2019 - Thompson was just the 22nd freshman in program history to post a double-digit point total and the first since 2019. Thompson, who etched her name in the EMU record books as on of just four freshmen to convert a penalty kick for the Eagles, tallied the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Western Michigan University, Oct. 16, 2022, to help Eastern move up in the standings and finish ninth overall. On Oct. 6, Thompson's penalty goal against Kent State University was her second score of the match, making her the third Eastern player on the year to record multiple goals in a single game. Thompson also added her name to the program's goal list as she tallied in a 1-1 draw with Dartmouth College, Sept. 4, to not only bag her first collegiate goal, but also score the 800th in program history.
