Sophomore honored for academic success following strong showing athletically
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic), a member of the Eastern Michigan University soccer program, has been selected as this week's Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Oct. 5. O'Farrell, along with Charlie Sharp of Western Michigan University's men's soccer team, were selected for this week's academic accolades following outstanding performances on the pitch.
O'Farrell had a big week on the pitch where she tallied five points in a pair of MAC matches against the University of Akron, Sept. 29, and Ohio University, Oct. 2. A critical assist off the foot of O'Farrell helped the Eagles earn a road win over the Zips, 3-2, before returning home to face Ohio in the week's capper. O'Farrell had a career day as she netted both goals for the Eagles in the setback. The two goals scored by O'Farrell is tied for the eighth-most in a single match at Eastern and marks the 52nd time an Eagle has finished a match with two goals. There are six instances were three goals were scored and one with four. With her goals, O'Farrell is currently the team leader in goals (4), assists (3) and points (11) and is the first Eastern player to reach double-digit points in a season since Sabrina McNeill tallied 15 points on seven goals and one assist in 2020. The four points O'Farrell recorded against OU are also a career high, surpassing the three points (one goal and one assist) she recorded at Illinois State University, Aug. 21.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs). A student-athlete may only be awarded MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice in one season.
O'Farrell and the Eagles return to the pitch Thursday, Oct. 6, for a 4 p.m. contest with visiting Kent State University. The match will be played on campus at Scicluna Field and admission is free for all fans.
