Gomez Earns MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University football place kicker Jesús Gómez (Puebla, Mexico-Prepa Tec Puebla) was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week today, Oct. 26.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Gomez hit an impressive personal and program milestone against Ball State. He drilled a career-long 55-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give EMU a 10-7 advantage after 30 minutes. The kick ties the program record and is the longest for EMU since Chad Ryland hit from the same spot in the team's game against Ohio University, Nov. 9, 2021. Dylan Mulder also drilled from the same distance in a game at Miami University, Nov. 7, 2015.
Gomez's kick is tied with just two others as the second-longest field goal make in the NCAA this season. The longest make in the NCAA this season is 56 yards, netted by the University of Missouri's Harrison Mevis. Gomez is now 8-of-10 on the season in field goal attempts. He is one of just five players in the league to be converting at an 80-percent clip this season.
EMU has five wins in its first eight games for the 37th time in its 131-season history. Just eight of those hot starts have come since Eastern began play as a member of the Mid-American Conference in 1976. In its time as a MAC member, just 12 EMU teams have reached five-or-more wins for the entirety of a season. Chris Creighton has led six of those teams, including this year's squad.
