The senior defensive end had a career-best game against Western Michigan, Oct. 8
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University senior defensive lineman Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) has garnered national acclaim after a career-best performance against Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 8.
Ramirez was named the Reese's Senior Bowl Defensive Player of the Week as well as the East-West Shrine Bowl's Breakout Defensive Player of the Week.
Ramirez made history Saturday when he recorded a career-high 4.0 sacks against Western Michigan en route to a 45-23 victory over the Broncos. The sack total is a single-game record at Eastern Michigan, and is the second-best individual performance in the NCAA this season. Ramirez wasted no time making an impact against the Broncos. Just one week removed from his first sack of the season, against UMass, Oct. 2, Ramirez notched another during WMU's first offensive drive of the afternoon. Ramirez has sacks in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2021 campaign, when he registered one sack against Bowling Green State University, Oct. 23, before following that performance with a pair of sacks at Toledo, Nov. 2. Ramirez is the only Eagle with two or more sacks this season.
The EMU pass rush put together a tremendous effort, totaling seven sacks in the victory over Western. It marks the 17th time since 1998 that Eastern has recorded five-or-more sacks in a game. The last time EMU did so was Nov. 2, 2021, at Toledo (5.0). EMU's program record for sacks in a game is eight, a number the team hit in its game against Alabama State University, Sept. 10, 2011.
Eastern's defense held Western's offense to just five total yards in the first quarter of the game between the two rivals, Oct. 8, by far a season-best single-quarter effort for the Green and White. Prior to last week's game, EMU's best single-quarter defensive effort was 35 yards allowed to Arizona State University in the first quarter of the team's game in Tempe, Sept. 17. The Eagles have now held opponents under 40 yards in a quarter five times this season.
Ramirez and the rest of the Eagles return to action with a home bout against defending Mid-American Conference Champion Northern Illinois University Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium.
