Taige Bryant sets school record in weight throw with 22.85m toss
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program displayed a strong performance at the Akron Quad Meet tonight, Jan. 14, inside the Stile Athletics Field House. There, both teams took home the win with men topping Akron, 163-123, and the women beating the Zips, 165-156.
"It was a strong showing for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We still have a lot of work to do but I thought that we competed hard and had solid performances in all areas. Taige Bryant has taken his performances to a whole new level. It will be exciting to see what he can accomplish this season."
Graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) outdid himself yet again in the weight throw, besting his school-record toss of 22.56m with a launch of 22.85m. For Bryant, his 22.85m throw currently ranks second in the nation and first in the Mid-American Conference. Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) also won the weight throw with a season-best throw of 19.65m.
Sophomore Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) earned a double-win on the night with victories in the 60m (6.86) and 200m dashes (21.35). The Bexley, Ohio native's 200 time is a personal-best and ranks eighth in the country. Classmate Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) ran a career-high time of 7.99 in the 60m hurdles to take first. Additionally, junior harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) had a busy night, participating in the 800 (2nd - 1:52.79), mile (1st - 4:04.15*), and 3000 (1st - 8:03.35). For Magnusson, all of his times produced tonight rank in the top-20 in the country.
Elsewhere on the track, junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) captured the 400m dash crown in 56.24 while sophomore Noriyah Johnson (Chanai, Greece-Second General (Abilene Christian)) took second in 56.79. Junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.73, her third victory in the event so far this season. The women's 4x400 relay team of juniors Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Edwards, freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door-Academy), and Johnson clocked in at 3:48.35 for first, nearly 10 seconds faster than the second-place team.
