ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program continued to build with another solid outing at the Michigan Invitational today, Jan. 22, inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
"Our throwers continue to shine," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We're really proud of their incredible performances week after week. Overall, we had some good marks in all event areas. We still have some things to work out but as a team, we're moving in the right direction."
For the fourth consecutive meet, the men's team saw their weight throw record broken, this time by junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy). Stephenson produced a toss of 23.22m to take second overall in the competition. The Gary, Ind. native's mark tops teammate Taige Bryant's (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) 22.85m heave set last weekend at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 14.
Moreover, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) broke her own record in the same event, achieving a massive throw of 20.62m for second. Previously, Clarke had a career-high toss of 19.82m. Senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) won his third-straight shot put competition so far this season with a mark of 17.92m.
On the track, sophomore Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) notched a first place finish in the 200 (21.52) and took second in the 60 (6.86). Classmate Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) registered a personal-best time of 7.97 in the 60m hurdles.
Sophomore sprinter Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Highland C.C.)) took third in the 60m dash in 7.55, the fastest time for any Eagle in the indoor season. Freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door Academy) earned bronze in the 200, crossing the finish line in a career-high time of 24.69, which also leads the team. The women's team capped off the night with a victory in the 4x400m relay, finishing in 3:51.61, ran by the quartet of Walkes, senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), sophomore Noriyah Johnson (Chanai, Greece-Second General (Abilene Christian)), and junior Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child).
