The Eagles kick off season at Mel Brodt Open, Sept. 3
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University cross country program is set to open its season at Bowling Green State University's Mel Brodt Open Friday, Sept. 3. The men's 5K is set to begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the women's race at 6:05 p.m.
The Eagles' last season opener also took place in Bowling Green, Ohio at the Falcon Invitational, Nov. 7, 2020. There, the men's team placed four runners in the top-8 to edge Miami, 35-43, and were paced by junior Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) who took second overall in 24:00.3 in the 8K. Meanwhile, sophomore Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) led the women's squad in the 6K race as she crossed the finish line in 19th with a time of 22:36.4.
Prior to last year's abbreviated season, the last time EMU opened up the cross country season in the month of September was back in 2019. The women's team started that season by dominating Western Michigan at the George Dales Invitational, 19-40, Sept. 7. The WMU contest, based in Three Rivers, Mich, saw eight Green and White runners finish in the top-10 with former Eagles Syndey Meyers and Natalie Cizmas finishing first and second, respectively.
The men's most recent September opener took place in Terre Haute, Ind. at the McNichols Invitational, Sept. 21, 2019, hosted by Indiana State. The Green and Yellow harriers notched a sixth-place team finish with 196 points while Northern Arizona won the meet with 31 points. Then-sophomore Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) was the first Eagle to finish the race, rounding out the top-25 with a time of 25:00.3 in the 8K.
