CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Two members of the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team were named All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), the organization announced today, July 6. The Green and White were one of nine Mid-American Conference schools to have multiple student-athletes recognized.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. EMU's two selections come from a list of 1,432 student-athletes from all levels of NCAA competition.
Eastern Michigan's honorees include redshirt senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) and freshman Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland). Connelly is a five-time honoree, while Watson earned this prestigious award for the first time in her career.
After returning for her "super senior year" following last year's COVID-19 cancellation, Connelly played 18 rounds and posted an average of 79.89. She shot a season-best 74 in the second round of the Georgia State Invitational, March 29. The Waterville, Ohio native tied for 11th at the Akron Invitational, April 17, with a two-round score of 152 (78-74).
During her first collegiate season, Watson played in 18 rounds and tallied an average of 78.72. She posted the second-lowest average on the squad and best among EMU's four freshmen. The Ashland, Ohio native finished four tournaments inside the top-25, including a seventh-place showing at the Don Benbow Collegiate with a 159 (80-79), March 8-9. She carded a season-best 74 in the final round of the Akron Invitational, April 17, and placed 16th at the MAC Championship with a 325 (80-78-77), April 23-24.
