EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan Track & Field program was represented by graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships today, June 9, as the No. 24 seed in the hammer throw. With his appearance in Eugene, Ore., Bryant became the first thrower in school history to compete in the national outdoor meet at the Division 1 level.

"We're proud of Taige," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "He did a great job. He held his own against tremendous competition. It's exciting to see him come away with a personal best and a new school record."

Just behind Hayward Field, the Oklahoma native achieved a school-record throw of 67.43m to place 21st overall. Prior to the national meet, the graduate student's career-high came at the Raleigh Relays where he registered a then-program-record distance of 66.01m, March 27. His 66.01m mark was then bested by fellow classmate Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) with a toss of 66.51m at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 8.

"Time and the hammer are flat circles, what ever is done shall be done again," said Assistant Coach Brian Korn. "So it is no surprise that Taige started and ended the year with a school record. Throwing a PR at the national meet shows his tremendous mental strength and focus. Never bet against this young man and the goal he sets before him."

Bryant will continue to display his skills at NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday, June 11, at 7:35 p.m. ET, in the discus throw. His performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships earned him the 18th seed in the event, as he notched a toss of 56.79m in Jacksonville, Fla., May 28. Then on Saturday, June 12, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) also looks to make history as she hopes to become the first member of the women's team to be named an All-American in the high jump. At the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, she cleared 1.82m to eclipse a career-high, tying for the second-best height in the outdoor event in school history. The women's high jump is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
