EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University track & field graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) wrapped up his spectacular season competing in the men's discus. The Oklahoma native ultimately finished 24th overall, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors once again.
"Today was tough for Taige but we're proud of his season and all his accomplishments during both indoors and outdoors," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "It's been an incredible year for him."
The graduate student came into the national meet as the No. 18 seed after registering a heave of 56.79m at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, May 28. Bryant notched his best toss of the season at the UCF Knights Invite, April 24, where he recorded a school-record launch of 58.27m. The 58.27m mark dethrone the previous program-best set by former Eagle Clark Wilson's 56.60m distance set in 2005.
During the indoor season, the Oklahoma product was named a Second Team All-American in the weight throw. At the national meet in Fayetteville, Ark., Bryant produced a 21.13m heave for 11th in the nation, March 11.
"If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be," said Assistant Coach Brian Korn. "Taige has accomplished something incredible this year. And no matter the outcome, of any meet, there is nothing but pride felt for the best thrower to ever wear Eastern Michigan across his chest."
Tomorrow, Saturday, June 12, senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) looks to make history as she hopes to become the first member of the women's team to be named an All-American in the high jump. At the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, she cleared 1.82m to eclipse a career-high, tying for the second-best height in the outdoor event in school history. The women's high jump is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
