JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University track & field program wrapped up its showing on the fourth day of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., today, May 29. One more Eagle clinched a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)).

"This is a big step forward for Quintella," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "She's healthy and peaking at just the right time. Quintella is a competitor and it will be exciting to see what she can do against the nation's best jumpers."

Johnson, a three-time Mid-American Conference Champion in the high jump, proved why she belongs in Eugene, Ore. Competing in the second flight, the Las Vegas, Nev. product achieved a personal-best leap of 1.82m on her first attempt at the height to tie for second all-time in program history. Previously, Johnson recorded her best outdoor leap in a Green and White uniform at the MAC Championships when she produced a jump of 1.78m, May 8.

"We are so proud of Quintella," said Assistant Coach Evan Brusich. "This year has been extremely difficult for everyone, and through every moment of it, Quintella has shown immense leadership and spread constant positivity. We knew she could do this and to see her come down and perform the way she did is absolutely wonderful."

With Johnson qualifying today, she will join graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Wednesday-Saturday, June 9-12, inside the University of Oregon's newly-refurbished Hayward Field. Bryant will put his skills on display in both the hammer and discus throws. The men's hammer throw competition is scheduled for Wednesday, June 9, at 2:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the men's discus is set for Friday, June 11, at 4:35 p.m. Johnson will take on the best in the country in the women's high jump on Saturday, June 12, at 2:30 p.m.
