MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to Central Michigan University, 1-0 and 4-2, in its doubleheader at Theunissen Stadium, May 22.

In the first game of the afternoon, junior Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park) tossed the full game, allowing just one run. Senior Daniel Warkentin (LeamingtonOntario-Leamington District (Parkland)) went 3-for-3 at the plate in his first start of the series to highlight the second game of the day.

Game One: Central Michigan 1, Eastern Michigan 0

A one-run complete game from junior Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park) was not enough for the Eastern Michigan as the Eagles fell to Central Michigan, 1-0, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Meis allowed just five hits and one run during his outing, striking out five. Three Eagles added a hit in senior Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and juniors Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) and Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare (North Iowa)).

Eastern Michigan saw an opportunity to strike right from the beginning, loading the bases via walks from seniors Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) and a single from Denton. However, the Eagles were unable to bring any runners home.

The Chippewas also managed to load the bases in the first inning, leading off with two hits before a bunt would allow Eastern to make the first out. After a walk loaded the bases, the Eagle defense would keep CMU off the board with a 6-4-3 double play to end the first.

Central Michigan would leadoff with a hit once again in the second inning, but Meis would settle in and retire the next three batters via two flyouts and strikeout to keep the game scoreless.

The Chippewas would plate their first run of the afternoon in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead before the Eagle defense would turn an inning-ending double play to limit the Central Michigan offense. Almost seeing a repeat inning in the bottom of the fourth, CMU would put a runner on third, but a 4-6-3 double play would prevent the Chippewas from scoring any more.

Eastern was almost able to tie the game in the top of the fifth. A single to right field for Nate Jones followed by a hit-and-run on a Hopkins single to left center put runners on the corners with one out for the Eagles. However, a subsequent lineout to third base would allow Central to end the inning on a double play of their own.

Despite a pair of Chippewa runners getting on base with two outs in the fifth inning, Meis was able to end the inning without allowing another run, and followed with a 1-2-3 sixth inning, the first of the series by any Eagle pitcher, to send Eastern back to the plate for the final inning.

Unable to get anything going in the final frame, the Eagles went down in order and fell to Central Michigan, 1-0.

Game Two: Central Michigan 4, Eastern Michigan 2

Eastern Michigan managed to break its series scoring drought in the second game of the afternoon, but ultimately fell to Central Michigan, 4-2.

Starting off on the mound was Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice), who struck out three and allowed seven hits in his 5.0 innings. Sophomore Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) threw the final inning for the Green and White, sitting the Chippewas down in order in his 1.0 inning.

Eastern was once again able to put runners on base in the first inning, coming in the form of singles from Hopkins and senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trail)). However, the Eagles were unable to find any more production and left the top of the first without a run.

Central Michigan would strike first in the bottom of the first inning, putting together a three-run, two-out rally to take a 3-0 lead.

Feldman held the Chippewas scoreless in the second and third innings, highlighted by a 1-2-3 frame in the third.

The Eagles broke its scoring drought in the top of the fourth, as Bault launched a no-doubt home run over the left field fence for Eastern's first run of the series. Three batters later, Warkentin would launch a solo shot of his own, pulling the Eagles within one, 3-2, after the top of the fourth.

Despite Feldman holding them scoreless in the fourth, CMU would add a run in the fifth, taking a 4-2 lead.

House tossed a scoreless, 1-2-3 sixth frame for EMU and was followed by a leadoff single from Warkentin in the seventh, but the Eagles were unable to plate any more runs, falling to Central Michigan, 4-2, in the final game of the afternoon.

EMU and CMU will conclude its series tomorrow, May 23, at 10 a.m.
