The Scranton, Pa. native joins EMU from West Florida

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Head Swimming Coach Derek Perkins announced the hiring of Mia Nonnenberg as an assistant coach today, May 20.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Mia Nonnenberg to our EMU Swim and Dive family," began Perkins. "She brings tremendous experience to our staff.  Mia has competed at the highest level both collegiately and nationally. She has also coached on the club, college and international stage.  Mia will provide a welcome asset to our program.  We are fortunate to have her with us."

Nonnenberg joins the Eastern Michigan coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of West Florida from 2019-21. While with the Argos, Nonnenberg co-led the team to back-to-back New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championship titles in 2020 and 2021. In addition, she aided in the development of seven swimmers that earned NCAA Division II All-America recognition.

While helping West Florida achieve strong performances in the pool, Nonnenberg also ensured the team was taking care of its academics, resulting in the Argos holding the highest GPA in Division II Women's Swimming and Diving during the Fall 2020 semester, achieving a 3.81 average.

Prior to joining the UWF staff, Nonnenberg was a volunteer assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming teams at the University of Alabama for the 2018-19 season. Primarily working with the middle-distance group, Nonnenberg directly assisted in coaching a NCAA Champion and several NCAA qualifiers during her season in Tuscaloosa.

"I am incredibly humbled and excited to step into this role at Eastern Michigan University," began Nonnenberg. "I want to thank Coach Perkins and Eastern Athletics for the opportunity to contribute towards the program's tradition of excellence. EMU is in a great position to continue to reach new heights in the sport, and I cannot wait to begin assisting in the development of leaders both in and out of the pool."

In addition to her time in collegiate athletics, Nonnenberg was the team manager for the Toronto Titans of the International Swimming League for the second season in 2020. Responsible for team operations, she worked with professional and Olympic athletes, the coaching staff, and production teams to organize and manage the needs of the team. Having to adjust to the restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nonnenberg assisted in the organization and execution of the five-week "bubble" season in Budapest, Hungary for the ISL.

An accomplished swimming student-athlete, Nonnenberg swam at Alabama from 2015-18. A two-time team captain, she was also a four-time NCAA Division I Championship individual qualifier, a NCAA Division I All-America Honorable Mention in the 400 IM, and set then-school records in the 500 and 1650 freestyle and 200 and 400 IM events. Nonnenberg was also named a First Team Scholar All-American twice, and to the Southeastern Conference Honor Roll on four occasions.

A 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifier, Nonnenberg finished 13th in the 400 IM (4:43.87), 19th in the 200 butterfly (2:12.87), and 28th in the 200 IM (2:17.05).

A native of Scranton, Pa., Nonnenberg graduated from Alabama in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in communication studies, and is completing her master's degree in physical education and human performance at West Florida.
