Rowing Preps for CAA Championships

5/14/2021 11:30:00 AM | Women's Rowing

The regatta will begin at 10: 20 a.m. Sunday, May 16

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (EMUEagles.com) – After a successful 2021 spring season, the Eastern Michigan University rowing team readies for a chance at the conference crown at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships Sunday, May 16. The championship regatta will take place on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. for the fourth-straight season. Last season's conference championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

"We're excited. It's been a long time. There's been a lot of things we have put off or put on hold. This year it's been a lot of sacrifices to get here. Sacrifices missing time with family, or not being able to go do things that you would normally do just to make sure that we are safe and staying away from COVID," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "And all those sacrifices, that time, and that work pays off for this weekend. And that's exciting."

The Eagles will compete against boats from Drexel University, University of California-San Diego, University of Connecticut, University of Delaware, Villanova University, and CAA defending champions Northeastern University.

The reigning champions enter as the top seed in all races, while EMU enters the regatta as the third seed in the Varsity Eight race. In the Second Varsity Eight competition, the Eagles are seeded fourth, and fifth in the Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight races, respectively.

Based on its seeding, the Green and White's Varsity Eight squad will compete in lane two, while the Second Varsity Eight team will race in lane five. The other two boats will see action in the first lane.

At the 2019 conference championship, EMU matched its best finish in program history with a third-place finish, May 19. The Eagles finished with 19 points behind Drexel (24 points) and champion Northeastern (26 points). The Second Varsity Eight squad finished second, while the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four teams placed third and fourth, respectively.

For their efforts at the conference race, former Eagles Amanda Flora and Addison Oblanas earned All-CAA team honors.

The CAA Championships are scheduled to open competition with the Third Varsity Eight starting at 10:20 a.m., the lone race of the day that doesn't help determine the eventual conference champion. The Second Varsity Eight final will follow at 10:30 a.m., while the Varsity Four will start at 10:40 a.m. Lastly, the Varsity Eight final will conclude the regatta at 10:50 a.m. The award ceremony is set for 11:30 a.m., where the All-CAA team will be announced.

Spectators will not be permitted to attend the championship based on local and New Jersey restrictions of mass gatherings in adherence of COVID-19. Fans can catch the action on FloSports (subscription required) or live results here
