Eastern recorded its fourth game with three-or-more multi-hit performers
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to Ohio University, 6-3, in the series opener, April 9, at Bob Wren Stadium.
Seniors Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) and Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), along with junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) each recorded two hits, marking the fourth time this season three-or-more Eagles have had multiple hits in the same game.
From the mound, veteran righty Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) tossed 5.2 innings, amassing four strikeouts, before turning it over to sophomore Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh), who threw 1.1 innings for the Green and White. Classmate Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) finished the game for EMU, striking out two and keeping the Bobcats off the board in his 1.0 inning of work.
Seeing opportunities right out of the gate, Eastern Michigan (8-14, 4-9 MAC) put three runners in scoring position in the first two innings, putting men on second and third in the first, and one on third in the second. However, it was not until the third inning that the Eagles were able to break through, with Kauffman drawing a walk with the sacks packed to put the Eagles in the lead, 1-0.
Not taking long to find the response, Ohio (12-11, 6-7 MAC) knocked two hits in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at one.
Adding to its lead in the fourth, Eastern Michigan leadoff man Anthony Sharkas (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) singled and advanced to second on an error to start the inning. In the next at-bat, Jones singled through the left side to score the sophomore and put the Green and White back on top, 2-1. Not done yet, Hopkins was hit by the pitch in his appearance at the plate, and displayed masterful base running as he took second and third on the next two consecutive pitches to find himself 90 feet away for Gora. The senior hit a chopper to left side to score Hopkins, and give the Eagles the 3-1 lead heading in to the bottom of fourth.
Feldman was challenged in the fourth, allowing two quick hits to start the inning, but the Warren, Mich. native forced the next two batters into a groundout double play and groundout, respectively, to end the threat. Continuing to roll, Feldman then tossed his third 1-2-3 inning of the night in the fifth inning to keep the Eagles in front.
After quiet offensive innings for Eastern, it was Ohio that would begin its scoring run in the sixth. Tying the game with a bases loaded, two-run double, OU would take the lead, 4-3, on a groundout to second in the next at-bat. Carrying momentum into the seventh, the Bobcats would add two runs to its lead on an error by Gora and wild pitch from Wagoner to carry a 6-3 advantage into the final two frames.
Neither side was able to get anything going in the eighth, as the Eagles were sat down in order and House took the mound to face the Ohio. Facing four batters, the sophomore got a quick lineout before surrendering a walk, but finished with two consecutive strikeouts to send the game to final frame.
Unable to plate any runs, Ohio came away with the victory, 6-3.
EMU and OU will play a seven-inning doubleheader tomorrow, April 10, beginning at 11 a.m. Fans can follow along via live stream or WOUB radio, with links being found on the baseball schedule page of EMUEagles.com.
