Ganesan was the only Eagle with a two-win day
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team lost on the road to Bowling Green State University Friday, April 30, 5-2. Eastern is now 10-16 overall, and 1-12 in Mid-American Conference play, with one match left in the season.
"We did a great job of staying focused and really fighting to get the doubles point, which BG wanted badly, so that was great for our No. 1 and 2 teams, " said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We actually did a pretty good job of transitioning that momentum to singles on multiple courts. Unfortunately, we just couldn't close them out. BGSU is deep and experienced with four seniors, and that experience really helped them today."
EMU started the contest motivated, securing wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to earn the doubles point. The duo at two finished first as redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) won 6-3. The reigning and four-time MAC Doubles Team of the Week, redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education), earned a 7-6 victory to clinch the doubles point and put the Eagles up, 1-0.
Despite this, the Green and White were unable to ride the wave of momentum into singles play. Ganesan was the only member of the squad able to triumph, defeating her opponent in three sets at No. 2, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. Pelayo (5-7, 5-7) and Whitney (3-6, 5-7) both battled in the three and six spots, respectively, but were unable to secure wins. The Eagles ultimately fell to the Falcons, 5-2.
Eastern Michigan will close out the season at home against the University at Buffalo for Senior Day, Sunday, May 2. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., pending the weather. The time will be announced Sunday morning. Fans can stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis by going to EMUEagles.com, or following us on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
