YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team saw its 2025-26 season end, April 19, as the Eagles dropped a 5-2 Mid-American Conference match to visiting Western Michigan University inside the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Eagles (10-12, 1-7 MAC) battled throughout, including two tough losses in three sets, as the Broncos (13-8, 4-4 MAC) took the win on EMU's Senior Day.

"It was a tough result to end the season, but I'm incredibly proud of the fight, resilience, and growth of this group," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said following the match. "We played a strong doubles point but just couldn't quite close it out. We responded well and dug in across the board in singles and each player competed for one another and responded to some incredibly tough challenges. I'm so proud of Regina (Mendez Carreño) for the legacy she leaves here. Her positive impact on our program can be felt on and off the court. She's been a leader for this young group and I'm proud of the way the team grew and accepted the challenges of the season. If we continue to learn, grow, and compete together, the future will be very bright for this group."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern Michigan honored senior Regina Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) as she competed in her final collegiate match ahead of the contest that saw the visitors take a 1-0 lead after a tightly contested doubles point. The No. 1 EMU pairing of Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes Vieria) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) got the ball rolling as they secured a 6-4 win, but Western Michigan edged Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) in a tiebreak at No. 2, 7-6 (7-4), and took the No. 3 match, 6-2, to earn the opening point.

In singles, it was the top of the lineup leading the way for EMU. After the Broncos won at No. 3 to take a 2-0 lead, Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) scored a straight-set win at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2, to cut into the deficit. She was followed by Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya, who delivered a dominant 6-2, 6-2 result at No. 1 to tie the match at 2-2 while improving her overall season record to 17-9. From there, however, Western Michigan responded by claiming victories in the four remaining singles matches, including both three-set battles, to take the team win. Tolstova fought hard at No. 2 but fell in the deciding set while Mendez Carreño extended her collegiate finale to three sets at No. 6 before ultimately falling.

» Eastern closed its season with a 10-12 record and a 1-7 mark in MAC play while Western closed its campaign with a 13-8 record overall and a 4-4 standing in the conference.
