FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The wind gusted, the greens ran speedy and scores were high Friday, April 30, during the opening 36 holes at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship on the 7,253-yard, par-72 Sycamore Hills Golf Club. After a slow start to the day, Eastern Michigan University rallied in the second round of the day to wrap up the opening day of the tournament in sixth-place with a 630 (321-309).
The Sycamore Hills setup is exceptionally hard to begin with, but when you mix in tournament pins and firm greens with 20-30 mph winds it can make good players look very pedestrian.
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) and freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) both reside inside the top-20. Both players shot an 81 to kickoff the day, but were able to post a 76 in the nightcap for a 157 in a tie for 17th.
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) was tied for the lead at the midpoint of the morning stanza before the back nine proved very difficult. Collins posted a 78 before adding an 80 for a cumulative total of 158 and 22nd-place.
Redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) is just one shot back with a 159 (81-78). Meanwhile, senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) carded an 80 before being substituted out for freshman Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland), who added a 79.
Kent State is leading the field at 36-over par 612, eight strokes ahead of second-place Ball State and Northern Illinois (620). The remainder of the field is within 12 shots of the Cardinals and Huskies. The Golden Flashes' Chris Vandette and Bowling Green's Nick Hofland are leading all individuals at six-over par 150.
Saturday's final round begins 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com
