FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Continuous improvement was once again the story for the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team, as the squad was able to shave off five strokes from the previous round at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Championship, May 1. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's club notched a 304 during Saturday's final round to finish in fifth place with a cumulative score of 934 (321-309-304) on the par-72, 7,253-yard Sycamore Hills Golf Club course.

Of the eight teams participating in the championship, Eastern joined Kent State and Miami as the only schools to post round over round improvement.

Kent State captured its fifth straight MAC Championships crown with a team total of 46-over par 910, 13 shots in front of Northern Illinois (923). The Golden Flashes' Chris Vandette won the individual title at 10-over par 226, finishing one stroke ahead of the Huskies Jordan Less and Miami's Cam Solomon and Charlie Nikitas.

EMU redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) carded birdies on No. 1, 3, and 18 for a one-over 73 and his fourth career top-10 finish with a tie for 10th. Seniors Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) and Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) tied for 17th-place with a 236. Collins finished with a 78, while Celone had a 79.

For the year, Collins led EMU with a 74.33 average and seven rounds of par-or-better this season. Celone finished the season with a 73.42 career scoring average, just shy of the EMU standard of 73.30 set by 2007 MAC Champion Graham Hill (2005-08).

In his first MAC Championship, freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) finished 28th with a 239 (81-76-83). Meanwhile, freshman Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) closed with a 74 after coming on as replacement for senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego).

After the tournament, the 2021 MAC men's golf postseason awards were handed out. Kent State's Cade Breitenstine was named Golfer of the Year, while Toledo's Barend Both claimed Freshman of the Year honors. Kent State head coach Jon Mills was awarded the Kermit Blosser Coach of the Year Award and Miami's Cam Solomon was voted to win the Earl Yestingsmeier Sportsman of the Year by his peers, which rounded out the postseason honors.

Saturday's action put a wrap on this COVID-shortened season for the Eagles.
