Taige Bryant sets school record in discus with 58.27m toss
HILLSDALE, Mich. & ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program boasted several notable personal records and one school record at the GINA Relays and Knights Invite, Saturday, April 24. Both teams made considerable progress in their final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championship meet.
""It was a strong weekend for us," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We had another school record and a number of seasonal and personal bests. We're excited to bring the entire team together and work towards our common goal two weeks from now."
The top performance of the day came from graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) in the discus. The veteran thrower surpassed former Eagle Clark Wilson's record distance of 56.60m set in 2005 by producing a 58.27m hurl for first place at the Knights Invite. Additionally, Bryant improved on his previous best that he set earlier in the season by over 5m (53.01m). The Oklahoma native now owns the school record in both the discus and hammer throw.
Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) PR'd in the discus as well, launching a 41.97m heave for the eighth-furthest distance in program history. Meanwhile, senior thrower Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) also had a good showing in Florida as he notched a career-high mark of 15.29m in the shot put.
Elsewhere in the field, the EMU high jumpers excelled. Senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) captured the high jump crown at 1.74m while freshman Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville) bested his competition with a personal-best height of 2.04m.
On the track, sophomore Trent Barron (Flint, Mich.-Carman-Ainsworth) clocked in at 49.47 in the 400m dash for a new career-high. Fellow sprinter Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) hit a personal-high time of 11.70 in the 100m dash for sixth. Moreover, junior Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child) also notched a career-best mark, finishing the 800m race in 2:11.56.
Lastly, the women's 4x400 crew of juniors Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), and redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) recorded a season-high 3:42.08 clip for the top spot in the race.
At the GINA Relays, senior pole vaulter Graysen Simmons (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) reached a new personal-best height of 3.88m. The Ohio product now sits No. 9 all-time in the event, passing former Eagle Kim Wise's 3.79m mark from 2005. In the shot put, senior Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) produced a career-high toss of 11.54m
For the Eagles, they now prepare for the outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships. The league title meet will be held in Oxford, Ohio, hosted by Miami University, Friday-Saturday, May 7-8. The men's side aims to complete the triple crown after capturing the cross country and indoor track & field titles. Meanwhile, the women's team looks to earn their first championship of the season.
