HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program kicked off the 54th annual Hillsdale College "GINA" Relays today, April 22, on the Ken Herrick Track. On the Charger's campus, the Eagles participated in just one event on the first day with the women's 5000m run.
"It was a good showing for us tonight," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "The girls fought hard and kept competing the whole way."
Junior Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) led the way for EMU with a time of 17:41.40 to finish runner-up. For St. Bernard, her performance surpassed her 5000m run at the Golden Grizzlies Invite (April 10) by nearly 25 seconds (18:06.21). Sophomore teammate Sofia Ivanko followed quickly behind Bernard for bronze, crossing the finish-line in 17:41.81. Meanwhile, junior Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) also posted a top-10 finish in the 5K, placing eighth in 17:57.47.
Eastern will be back at Hillsdale College tomorrow for day two of the relays. Action begins at noon with the men's hammer throw and will conclude with the men's 10,000m race at 9:50 p.m. Additionally, other members of the track & field program will commence competition at the University of Central Florida's Knights Invite. The Orlando meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Friday where the women's hammer throw will kickoff the festivities.
