YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team capped its 2020-21 season with a sixth-place showing at the Mid-American Conference championships, April 17, at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles finished with 305 points overall and two individual MAC championships, both from senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) in 1-meter and 3-meter diving.
After finishing seventh in the 3-meter diving preliminaries a day ago, Berger came out on top in the championship final, recording a career-best total of 329.70 in the event to complete the sweep of the diving events and claim her second MAC title. The Batavia, Ohio native is the first Eagle to sweep the diving events since Danielle Hulvey did so at the 2013 championships, and first 3-meter champion since the same season.
Three Eagles qualified for the final session after the morning preliminary session. In the 100 freestyle, senior Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) qualified for the consolation final after her 51.48, 14th-place swim in prelims. Classmates Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) and Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) both had season-best swims in the 200 butterfly preliminaries, with Staver making the championship final with her sixth-place, 2:00.15 mark, and Hofmann earning a spot in the consolation final with her 2:02.28 time, good for 11th in the field.
An additional three Eagles posted personal records in the morning session, beginning with freshman Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y.-Owego Free Academy), who swam 2:06.10 in the 200 backstroke for a new season-best. Sophomore Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences) followed with a new season standard in the 100 freestyle, coming in at 51.74, while senior Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wis.-Pewaukee) posted a lifetime best 2:26.29 in the 200 breaststroke to round out the accomplishments.
Starting off the evening with the mile, senior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) matched her 2020 finish at the MAC Championships with a sixth-place swim in a career-best time of 16:54.37. Staffeldt followed with a seventh-place showing in the 100 freestyle consolation final, going 51.62 to complete the race.
After both recording season-best swims in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly, Staver and Hofmann each improved to post new career-best marks in the finals. Hofmann clocked in at 2:00.71 for second place in the consolation final, while Staver finished sixth in the championship final with a time of 1:59.35.
Following the meet, Berger was named to All-MAC First Team for the first time in her career, as well as the MAC Diver of the Year, becoming the first Diver of the Year from EMU since Hulvey in 2014. For the second consecutive season, Staver was named to the All-MAC Second Team, while Buck Smith was named Diving Coach of the Year for the 12th time.
